The Safer Pharma campaign was launched in 2016 by HCWH Europe to pressure the European Commission to publish the overdue strategic approach to pollution of water by pharmaceutical substances required by Article 8c of EC Directive 2013/39/EU.

With financial support from The European Climate Initiative (EUKI), HCWH Europe launched a pilot project to support six European hospitals in measuring their carbon footprint, including greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from the use of anaesthetic gases. During the project, (which ran until March 2018), HCWH Europe worked with hospitals from France, Germany, Poland, Portugal, Spain, and Sweden to measure emissions and share data.In order for the EU to meet its 2030 climate and energy package targets, countries must set national goals for different economic sectors. IntroductionDisinfectants are widely used in healthcare settings - they are essential to prevent cross contamination, outbreak of diseases, and hospital-acquired infections. Yet, the biocidal active substances that are so effective at disinfecting products, surfaces, and skin also pose a variety of potential hazards to human health and the environment. Health Care Without Harm (HCWH) Europe is coordinating the SAICM 2.0 project, which aims to combat these unintended hazards by promoting safer, more environmentally friendly disinfectants without compromising on hygienic and occupational health standards.By expanding procurement and health professionals’ knowledge of the health and environmental impacts of disinfectants, they can align their procurement criteria with healthcare’s healing mission and reduce the risks associated with disinfectants.
