European Sustainable Healthcare Awards 2024

After a highly successful launch last year, the European Sustainable Healthcare Awards are back in 2024, celebrating the amazing work happening across Europe to accelerate progress towards a sustainable healthcare sector.
 

Organised by Health Care Without Harm (HCWH) Europe and sponsored by Philips, the awards recognise sustainability projects and individuals that are making a real difference in reducing the environmental impact of healthcare activities in the WHO Europe region. 

The awards now feature three brand-new categories: 

  • The Bolmstedt Innovation Award - celebrating creative and novel solutions for sustainable healthcare
  • The Healthy Futures Award - for impactful projects that are making great strides towards a net zero and toxic-free future 
  • The Rising Star Award - recognising an outstanding sustainability champion working in the European healthcare sector

Projects can be entered for multiple categories if eligibility requirements are met. Entries will be judged by our panel of industry experts.
 

All finalists will receive a certificate and free passes to the online conference CleanMed Europe 2024, where the winner will be announced.

Award ceremony

The judging panel will announce a shortlist for each award in April 2024. All shortlisted finalists will be invited to join us in Brussels for the award ceremony, which will be broadcast live on 7 June 2024 as part of our online conference CleanMed Europe. Travel and accommodation expenses will be covered, and each finalist will be asked to present a short summary of their work.

All finalists will be promoted and celebrated across HCWH Europe’s extensive network of healthcare organisations and professionals, with the winning organisation prominently featured. Award winners will also receive a communications pack with materials to promote their achievements, including a press release and short video.

Bolmstedt Innovation Award

The Bolmstedt Innovation Award recognises a sustainability project in Europe that demonstrates cutting-edge innovation, accelerating the change necessary to build a healthcare sector that is better for planet and people alike. This award celebrates novel and creative solutions that are transforming how we deliver healthcare.

This new award honours Anders Bolmstedt, the Chair of HCWH Europe’s Board of Directors between 2017 and 2023. During his time as the organisation’s Chair, Anders has brought a combination of technical expertise, visionary leadership and determination, supporting the growth of best practice and innovation in sustainable healthcare across Europe. Outside of HCWH Europe, Anders coordinates the chemical management in Region Västra Götaland, Sweden, from the aspects of health and environmental protection.

The award is open to current and prospective members of the Global Green and Healthy Hospitals (GGHH) network. Healthcare providers are invited to submit an entry on current or recently-completed sustainability projects at their facilities.  

The deadline for submission is 5 April 2024. Finalists will be notified in April 2024.

Healthy Futures Award

The Healthy Futures Award recognises a healthcare sustainability project in Europe that is making a major contribution towards creating a net zero and toxic-free future. This year, this award will spotlight projects that significantly reduce CO₂e emissions, putting the healthcare sector on the path to zero emissions.

The award is open to current and prospective members of the Global Green and Healthy Hospitals (GGHH) network. Healthcare providers are invited to submit a sustainability project that can demonstrate a significant impact on reducing healthcare emissions at their facilities. 

The deadline for submission is 5 April 2024. Finalists will be notified in April 2024.

Rising Star Award

The Rising Star Award recognises an outstanding individual who has gone above and beyond to make a positive contribution to healthcare sustainability efforts in the WHO Europe region. The Rising Star is an individual who champions environmentally-friendly practices in the workplace, and inspires others to do the same.  

This award is open to anyone working in the European healthcare sector. Those working in the sustainable healthcare community are invited to nominate (or self-nominate) an individual they work with who is going the extra mile in driving sustainability efforts at their organisation, and beyond. 

The deadline for submission is 5 April 2024. Finalists will be notified in April 2024.
