We are delighted to announce that we are now inviting applications for the 2020 Health Care Climate Champion Awards as part of the Health Care Climate Challenge. This is the 5th year of the awards and we look forward to recognising your institution for its achievements, innovations, and effective climate programs and initiatives.
To be eligible for the Climate Champion Awards you must be a member of the Global Green & Healthy Hospitals (GGHH) network and have signed the Health Care Climate Challenge Pledge (more on this below). To apply, you simply need to submit your latest climate data via our Hippocrates Data Center on GGHH Connect.
Our Climate Champion Awards are available in multiple categories related to the three pillars of the Climate Challenge: Mitigation, Resiliency, and Leadership.
The deadline for submission of data is 16 October 2020 - we will announce award winners in November/December.
What is the Health Care Climate Challenge?
Launched at the Paris Climate Conference in 2015, the Health Care Climate Challenge is an HCWH initiative that aims to mobilise healthcare institutions around the world to play a leadership role in addressing climate change.
To date, more than 200 institutions have joined the Health Care Climate Challenge and committed to taking meaningful action. Challenge participants have collectively reported commitments to reduce their carbon emissions by more than 34 million metric tons.
The Challenge and its Pledge are based on three main pillars:
- Mitigation: Reducing healthcare’s own carbon footprint and/or fostering low carbon healthcare.
- Resilience: Preparing for the impacts of extreme weather and the shifting burden of disease.
- Leadership: Educating staff and the public while promoting policies to protect public health from climate change.

Join the Health Care Climate Challenge
Any hospital or health system can join the Health Care Climate Challenge, regardless of where you are in your climate journey.
The first step is to sign the Health Care Climate Challenge Pledge - by signing this Pledge you are publicly recognising the link between health and climate change and demonstrating a commitment to delivering Climate-smart Healthcare. The Climate Champion Awards also provide an opportunity to gain recognition for your efforts and achievements, both within your own organisation and more widely.
By joining the Challenge, eligible organisations will be granted membership of Global Green & Healthy Hospitals - giving you free access to tools and resources, including our online collaboration platform GGHH Connect and Hippocrates Data Center.
