The healthcare sector is uniquely situated to drive the transition to a low-carbon and sustainable economy.

Healthcare facilities worldwide can collaborate and share knowledge to accelerate this transformation.

By uniting expertise, exchanging ideas, and cultivating a pioneering community of practice, the sector can adopt best practices, promote innovation, and reduce its overall climate impact.

About

Launched in 2024, the Community of Action for the Reduction of Emissions (C.A.R.E.) is a multi-year initiative to build an international community focused on learning, innovation, and cooperation. The project will focus on specific actions and resources aimed at accelerating the healthcare sector transition to zero emissions in involving members of our GGHH network, the largest sustainable healthcare network in the world.

Designed with a global reach, C.A.R.E. will be rolled out regionally by the different offices of Health Care Without Harm (HCWH) in Europe, Latin America, and Australia. This will ensure activities meet the needs and interests of our diverse communities and stakeholders.

Objectives

C.A.R.E. focuses primarily on accelerating climate action and the decarbonisation of the healthcare sector, addressing different aspects that contribute to its carbon footprint.

Through in-person and virtual training, learning opportunities, and events, this initiative strives to:

  • Foster peer-to-peer learning and connections to inspire collective action and shared success
  • Recognise common challenges, questions, and opportunities to drive sustainable action and achieve zero emissions
  • Deliver practical solutions, resources, and tools that accelerate collaboration and progress across the network

At the end of the project, representatives from participating GGHH healthcare institutions and experts from around the world will be invited to come together at a global gathering. There, we will collaborate, network, and share experiences from the different regions involved, celebrating successes, new approaches, and strategies for climate action.

C.A.R.E. in Europe

HCWH Europe will carry out different activities and provide several opportunities for GGHH members in the region:

  • Access to tools and learning resources, that will inform and educate on many topics relating to climate-smart healthcare.
  • Participation in training events, both online and in-person, to further individual understanding of healthcare sustainability and provide tangible actions that can be implemented in their own healthcare organisations.
  • Opportunities to engage and network with other climatechampions, inspiring and learning from each other through online platforms and in-person events.
