HCWH Europe partners with the World Resources Institute (WRI) to bring their Coolfood Pledge to healthcare facilities across Europe. This initiative aims to reduce the carbon footprint of the food members serve.

Coolfood Pledge

The Coolfood Pledge helps dining facilities – from hotels and restaurants to universities, schools, hospitals, and workplace cafeterias – cut their food-related greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by shifting towards plant-rich diets.

A quarter of all GHG emissions come from food production. By simply changing what we eat, we can make a difference to our climate.

By joining the Coolfood Pledge, members have the opportunity to:

  • Calculate their Scope 3 food-related emissions
  • Set a science-based reduction target for diet-related GHG emissions
  • Gain access to innovative ideas and best practices
  • Develop a roadmap to reduce food-related emissions
  • Receive personalised, detailed feedback
  • Showcase their commitment to reducing their climate impact

The collective target of all Coolfood Pledge signatories is to reduce food related GHG emissions by 25% by 2030 - relative to a  2015 baselinein line with the ambition of limiting the global temperature rise to well below 2 ºC set by the Paris Agreement.

Coolfood Pledge signatories

So far, 10 European healthcare facilities, representing 9 million meals a year, have signed the Coolfood Pledge. Since 2015, GHG food-related emissions in healthcare were reduced by 7% per plate. To reach our shared ambition, weare currently looking for more European healthcare facilities to sign on to the pledge.

If your hospital is interested in signing the Coolfood Pledge, please contact Ginevra Jesse.
